Don’t take Reishi before reading this!

Reishi Mushroom Tincture

Habitat and origin

Reishi is a woody fungus that grows mainly on the trunks of wild plum decomposition, sometimes those of oak or hemlock. Very rare in the wild, it grows only in the mountains, in deep forests. Nowadays, it is also grown in an artificial environment in China, elsewhere in Asia and North America, including Quebec.

Dosage of reishi

In Japanese and Chinese medicine, dosages typically range from 1.5 g to 9 g per day of dried fungus or the equivalent in the form of tablets, capsules or solid or fluid extract. Consult a trained practitioner for personalized treatment.

History of reishi

This fungus has for over 2000 years, an unusual reputation in Asia. It is mentioned in the oldest written in Chinese Pharmacopoeia (classical herbarium Seng Nong – published in 56 BCE) and it is believed that Asians knew reishi for centuries, even millennia before this time.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM ) and , after him, the kempo medicine in Japan, take the flesh of reishi for a valuable tonic Qi (or Chi ) , the vital energy that supports the entire body. Therefore, it is assigned a global action such adaptogen in traditional medicine. For MTC, such substances have the power to strengthen the whole body and help maintain an optimal state of health and balance.

Reishi is particularly appreciated as it is extremely rare in the wild. It only grows in effect in deep mountain forests, usually on the trunks of plum decomposition, and it is found that 2 or 3 for 10,000 dead plum.

Although the Chinese have tried for centuries to grow reishi, it was not until the early 1970s that Japanese researchers have succeeded. From that moment, the fungus has become easily accessible to ordinary mortals. He was previously reserved for the privileged few who could afford the luxury of such a rarity.

Traditionally, there are 6 different varieties of reishi depending on the color (red, purple, blue, yellow, black or white). It was understood much later (in 1972) that these color differences are due to specific conditions of growth and not genetic variation within the species. It seems that fans prefer red reishi.

Nowadays, the fungus enjoys relative popularity among cancer patients.

Research on reishi

Arthritis effectiveness:
A preparation containing reishi and 3 other plants used traditionally in Chinese medicine has been tested in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Thirty of them were taken , in addition to their usual treatment , 4 g and 2.4 g of reishi traditional mixture per day . After 24 weeks, the treatment group experienced greater pain relief than the control group. However, the dosage of blood indicators of arthritis revealed no difference between the 2 groups.

Cancer effectiveness:
More studies in vitro or in animal models tend to validate the use of reishi cancer promoted by traditional Chinese medicine. The mushroom contains substances (polysaccharides and triterpenes ) capable of inhibiting tumor growth , and their distribution in the body (metastasis ) 21 . These effects were observed on various kinds of cancers, including cancer and prostate cancer.

However, if laboratory studies appear to indicate the effects of reishi, clinical demonstration of efficacy is not yet established. Some trials have been published by a group of New Zealand researchers. They concern a reishi extract marketed under the name Ganopoly ®. The latter was administered to people with cancer in advanced stages. The results indicate that reishi extract could improve their quality of life. It would also strengthen their immune system weakened by chemotherapy and radiothérapie1 -4. The positive findings of these studies should nevertheless be tempered by the fact that many have methodological flaws (lack of placebo.3, 4, inconnue3 nature of cancer).

Cardiovascular protection:
Preliminary trials have yielded results suggesting that reishi may be beneficial for cardiovascular health. Thus, in people with coronary artery disease, a 12-week treatment with (Ganopoly ®) commercial extract helped reduce several symptoms: palpitations, chest pain. It also reduced their cholesterol and diastolic blood pressure. This hypotensive effect (decreased blood pressure) was also observed by other researchers, in people prone to hypertension.

Moreover, in the 1990s, a project with healthy people with atherosclerosis or clinical trial has led to the conclusion that reishi could , in 2 cases, plaquettaire17 inhibit aggregation. Fifteen years later, a second study from another laboratory reversed these findings relative to healthy individuals. The question on the properties of reishi remains open.

Traditional use Fighting fatigue and strengthen the body in general. The results of a double-blind placebo conducted in China to 132 neurasthenic subjects (chronic fatigue) indicate that reishi extract (Ganopoly ®) was more effective than placebo in relieving the symptoms of this affection19 .

Immunity:
Traditional Chinese Medicine attributes to reishi the ability to stimulate immunity. Observations in immunosuppressed patients (see Cancer above) tend to confirm this. Other results obtained with healthy individuals indicate that the fungus could modulate the immune system, including changing the proportion of some of its cells.

During two preliminary trials in Thailand, reishi has halted proteinuria (excess protein in the urine) in diabetic patients with kidney disease.

On the other hand , a preparation containing extracts of reishi and 2 other plants ( ASHMI ® ) was developed by U.S. researchers from a traditional Chinese preparation consisted of 14 plants, to treat asthma . Preliminary studies in animals and humans have been sufficiently satisfactory to warrant further testing.

Reishi Mushroom Side Effect

As reishi can lower blood pressure, its use is against – indicated in people with low blood pressure.

Because of its potential anticoagulant effect, reishi is not recommended in cases of thrombocytopenia , and before and after surgery or childbirth. Note, however, that the inhibitory effect of reishi on platelet aggregation effect is controversial (see related section in the section on cardiovascular protection).

Reishi can cause dryness of the mouth, throat and nasal passages, itching, nose bleeding and diarrhea. No Interactions with other plants, supplements or drugs have been reported.

Reishi in Supplements form

Reishi is available in many forms: capsules, tablets, extracted solids or fluids, but also sliced and dried mushroom powder. Concentrations vary greatly from one sample to another (20:1 or 50:1, for example) and some products are standardized to contain 10% polysaccharides, one of the active ingredients suspected of reishi. Prices also vary widely.

In traditional Chinese medicine , only the flesh of the fungus ( hat and foot) are used, but many supplement manufacturers also use the mycelium , that is to say, the filaments from spore germination , a part that costs less but , according to the pharmacist Jean -Yves Dionne, is far from the therapeutic power of the flesh.
I personally remain convinced that, when all the pros and cons are tallied, tinctures remain an effective and elegant way of tapping into the remarkable therapeutic benefits that herbs bring to people who are ailing or whose health is in some way compromised.

What are antioxidants and free radicals?

Free Radicals Formation

Antioxidants are organic compounds found in food especially in vegetables with bright colors and grains. Common antioxidants in food include: vitamin A, C and E; beta-carotene, lycopene and the trace mineral selenium. They act by cleansing the body of free radicals, which can cause cell and DNA damage resulting in aging and many chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Antioxidants work on neutralizing free radicals by donating an electron. However, all antioxidants transform into free radicals in the process with one exception: glutathione, which is created by the liver. That’s why it’s called the master antioxidant; it works by reversing the transformation of these antioxidants into free radicals.

Providing the body with a higher ratio of antioxidants to free radicals and providing your livers with precursors to glutathione, such as cysteine or NAC, are the solutions to this dilemma. Whole glutathione cannot get to the gut intact that’s why antioxidants and glutathione precursors for the liver must be supplied through the diet and supplementation.
For the first time, scientists have discovered a genetic pathway suggesting that antioxidants may help in the treatment of cancer, according to a study conducted by researchers from Thomas Jefferson University and published in the journal Cancer Biology & Therapy.

Scientists have known for a long time that diets high in antioxidant-containing foods are associated with a lower risk of cancer. This effect is widely attributed to the fact that antioxidants remove DNA-damaging free radicals from the body.

A critical review of the role of dietary antioxidants suggests that Vitamin A and E, along with coenzyme Q10, flavonoids, and resveratrol, show promise in extending human life.

What’s the cheapest common source of antioxidants?

Superfoods are known to be very low in calories, potent in nutrients, antioxidants, amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Unless you discovered the fountain of youth, super foods supplements are your body’s best bet if you want to stay healthy and look younger.

These antioxidant-rich foods reduce the risk for fatal diseases like cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, while allowing us to meet our daily nutritional requirements.

In order for your body to absorb and process them, these antioxidants must come from an organic natural source like superfoods. The best way to eat them is in form of supplements but remember not all supplements are created equal. Superfood supplements have to be pure and free from fillers and preservatives and most importantly it has to be freeze dried if in powder form (to conserve its potency) or cold pressed if it’s an oil.

Can Coconut Oil Replace Beauty Products?

coconut beauty products

Coconut Oil as a Deep Conditioning Hair Mask

Heat from blow-dryers and straighteners, chemicals from hair dye and other products, and even UV rays from the sun can do serious damage to your hair. Salon deep conditioning treatments can cost hundreds of dollars. Kourtney Kardashian has claimed to use organic Coconut Oil as a monthly deep conditioning hair mask and you can too! Here’s how:

Mash one ripe Avocado and mix with 2 tablespoons of warmed organic Coconut Oil. Apply the mixture to the ends of your hair and work your way towards the roots. Concentrate most of the mixture on the bottom half your hair. It is not necessary to cover the roots. Once all the mixture is saturated throughout your hair, wrap hair with saran wrap and then a hot towel. After 30 minutes, shampoo and condition and then style as usual. Use this mask once a month to keep hair shiny and soft.

You can also work a dime sized amount of Coconut Oil into your ends when it is wet or dry and then style and go.  This works as a leave in conditioner that smells and feels great.

Coconut Oil as a Face Wash

Washing your face with oil seems counterproductive right? Think again. Washing your face with Coconut Oil is a part of a regimen known as The Oil Cleansing Method. Essentially, by mixing two oils, you can cleanse and moisturize the face naturally.

You’re going to need organic Coconut Oil and Castor Oil. Castor Oil naturally draws out dirt and unclogs your pores while Coconut Oil gently moisturizes. You’re also going to need a clean bottle or jar with a cap to store your mixture in.

If you have oily skin, mix 1 part Coconut Oil with 3 parts Castor Oil. If you have normal or combination skin, mix 2 parts Coconut Oil with 2 parts Castor Oil. If you have dry skin, mix 3 parts Coconut Oil with 1 part Castor Oil. Cap and shake the jar until the oils are well mixed.

Gently massage a dime sized amount onto DRY face. Work into all areas of the face for 30 seconds to a minute. Then wet a washcloth with hot water and place it gently over your face for 30 more seconds. This will open and unclog your pores. Remove and rinse the washcloth. Use the wash cloth to wipe the excess oil from your face. Your face will immediately feel softer and look brighter.

You can also use Coconut Oil as eye make up remover. Simply warm a teaspoon of Coconut Oil and dip a cotton ball in it. Gently rub the make up off of your eyes. You’ll be amazed that it works just as well as expensive make up removers and leaves your lids and lashes softer than ever.

Coconut Oil as a Moisturizer

I’m sure you’ve seen Coconut scented body lotions but did you know that Coconut Oil itself can actually replace your lotions and moisturizers? Coconut Oil is incredibly moisturizing and incredibly good for your skin.

Take a warm bath or shower, make sure to cleanse, and then pat your skin dry with a towel. Apply the Coconut Oil just as you would a lotion or moisturizer. Massage the oil into your skin, concentrating more on the dryer areas such as your elbows and knees. You can always wipe off excess oil with a towel when you are finished.

Many people find that Coconut Oil works just as well as lotion. Some people find that it works better. After a couple of days of moisturizing with Coconut Oil, you might find that you don’t moisturize as often as you had to with lotion.

Coconut Oil is a natural way to give your body the moisture it needs and if you’d like to try it as a moisturizer, face wash or hair mask, check out Perfect Coconut Oil by Perfect Supplements.

Swine Flu, Influenza and Immune System

Flu Virus

The world is aware that right now, on a global level, there is a massive scare regarding the H1N1 swine flu virus. The vaccination program that is being recommended by the World Health Organization (W.H.O) is potentially even scarier than the virus itself. While speculation and conspiracy theories abound regarding the cause and transmission of the swine flu virus, one thing is certain. The best and most effective way to prevent infection from any type of influenza virus is to construct an immune system fueled by antibodies so potent that flu bugs are decimated immediately after being introduced to your personal physiology. To build an indestructible immune system, it is important to begin focusing on one organ above all others and to supplement with one miraculous life giving substance first. That organ is the alimentary canal or human gastro intestinal tract and the miraculous substance is Colostrum, the first choice of health enthusiasts who are looking to SurThrive. In fact a PubMed study of Colostrum proved it to be three times more effective against influenza than vaccines! PubMed is a government funded national library of allopathic medicine comprised of more than 19 million citations for biomedical articles from MEDLINE and life science journals.

Here is the study:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17456621

Due to the many seen and unseen stressors and pollutants of modern day life amidst the carnage of the industrial and technological revolution, the GI tract usually takes a pretty hard beating. One of the reasons it takes such a beating is because of its size, about 30 feet from mouth to anus and because of its function, to process food, liquids and emotions consumed on a daily basis. The reason it suffers due to its size is because it has a lot of delicate surface area that is usually in a state of peristalsis or organized muscle contractions caused by the digestive function. Peristalsis can often be disrupted by stress, poor diet and poor lifestyle. This disruption causes the bodies’ immune function to go into a state of disarray making effective combat of viral or bacterial invaders a challenge. The good news is that with the consumption of proper elements, the GI tract has the ability to heal and renew immune function within a relatively short amount of time.

Cultured foods such as kefir, yogurt, sour kraut, kim chi, natto, etc will replenish your GI tract with healthy probiotics (pro-life). Probiotics are bacteria like acidophilus (acid loving milk bacteria) that will give strength and immunity to your bodies’ anti-viral defense systems. Eating these foods multiple times daily combined with a lot of Colostrum and medicinal mushrooms will allow you to maintain superior health throughout the most extreme of conditions. When Daniel Vitalis and I travel around the country giving lectures and educating people about ways to take control of their health and sovereignty we do massive amounts of Colostrum, medicinal mushrooms and cultured foods. We visit airports and major metropolitan cities on a frequent basis. The amount of germs and viruses that we are exposed to are astronomical. But, throughout all of our travels, we SurThrive and have the most amazing experiences without ever getting sick! In addition to creating the lifestyle that we choose, we also listen to our bodies and give them the high quality nourishment they demand and deserve.

Five Ways To Add More Fruits & Vegetables To Your Diet

superfood recipes - my healthy outlet

The Harvard School of Public Health recently published a list of tips to help individuals struggling to eat enough fruits and vegetables every day. Perfect Supplements heartily agrees with their ideas and would like pass them on to you with some suggestions of our own.

1. Keep fruits and vegetables out on the counter or on the top shelf of your fridge. If it is out in plain sight, you are more likely to grab and go. Apples, bananas, grapes, carrot and celery sticks are excellent choices to have on hand.

2. Try to incorporate some fruit and vegetable into every meal. Fruit in your cereal or a veggie omelet for breakfast, fruit in your salad or added vegetables in your soup for lunch and a vegetable stir fry or fruit parfait at your evening meal. An orange or apple at snack time is highly recommended over chips and other salty snacks loaded with empty calories. Always choose fresh or frozen over canned or dried because of the added sugar.

3. Explore the produce aisles at your local grocery store or farmer’s market and try one new fruit or vegetable every week. There are so many tasty and interesting choices and you may be pleasantly surprised to discover that you like mango and brussel sprouts.

4. Eat a variety of different fruits and vegetables: dark leafy greens such as spinach or kale, orange vegetables such as carrots or squash, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli or cabbage, legumes such as black beans, citrus fruits such as oranges or grapefruit, berries, grapes, etc. The Harvard report said to “bag the potatoes” and choose vegetables with more nutrients. Potatoes are very high in carbohydrates.

5. Try some healthy new recipes that use more vegetables and fruits. There are some wonderful vegetable casseroles, delicious fruit and vegetable soups, and dozens of different fruit salad combinations. For a delightful change we like to add mandarin oranges, pineapple chunks, sliced kiwi or strawberries to our salad greens. We top it with a sweet salad dressing and a handful of sunflower seeds or slivered pecans, walnuts or almonds. Delicious!

If you are like most Canadians, you probably are not getting the recommended amounts. That’s why Perfect Supplements creates all natural, organic and freeze-dried superfood supplements such as Perfect Aquatic Greens and Perfect Acai Berry. The easy way to add the benefits of more fruit and veggies to you diet.

Our busy hustle and bustle lives can benefit from eating more nutritious food like fresh fruits and vegetables that are known to be a natural source of energy and essential in preventing certain diseases. Why not have some beautiful green spinach, juicy red tomato, luscious purple plum, or yummy red apple with your next meal?

Thriving Through Injuries – A Story of SurThriving!

Surthrival Products
Hey SurThrivalists!  We’ve got another incredible healing story to share with you that recently came in to us from a fellow customer.
Talk about determination…  The level of accomplishment this individual has achieved is so impressive!

Thank you again for sharing your inspiring story Christopher!

It was 1990, and I was 16 years old when a driver pulled out in front of me leading to a fairly serious car crash.  The resulting knee injury lead me to an extremely painful surgery where the bone was cut and a large screw was inserted.

Fast forward to 2003, when I dislocated my shoulder badly in martial arts practice.  I chose not to have surgery on it.  The resulting weakness caused a significant muscle tear on the same side a few months later while moving heavy equipment.  This injury, combined with a now arthritic knee, left me devastated.  I tried to tough it out and work around my injuries but was only left with more pain.

I had to quit all training, and as someone who thrives on intense physical activity, this was very difficult.

In 2008, I began chiropractic and message treatments.  The therapists were shocked by the condition of my back with its large, knotty adhesions.  Slowly, the pain began to fade and I wanted to resume training but I knew what had to be done next: That big screw had to come out.

It was at this time that I became interested in herbalism and decided to use SurThrival products to aid in recovery from surgery instead of prescription medications.  Once the screw was taken out, I was left with a hole straight through my tibial tuberosity that was the size of my index finger.  I began taking Elk Antler and immediately noticed the anti-inflammatory effects it had.  It took about 8 months for the bone to grow back and two more months before I could fully squat with no pain.  I was very excited…Time to rebuild!

I chose to use kettle and club bells to continue to rehabilitate and strengthen my shoulder and its now severely atrophied muscles on that side.  I continued to use Elk Antler and added in Pine Pollen and also continued with Reishi for its adaptogenic effects (Adaptogen are plant derived agents that help to adapt the body or protect it from stress. Adaptogens can help you cope with everyday stress, anxiety, depression and fatigue). Now two years after surgery, I am more than happy with my progress, as I had previously thought that I would be in chronic pain for the rest of my life.  Thankfully, I was very wrong.

I feel that SurThrival products aid me greatly in recovery from exercise, as well as rebuilding damaged soft tissue, bone, ligaments, and cartilage.  I can feel the healing from deep, long term injuries.

I’m now in the best shape of my life and feel better than ever and will keep on SurThriving!

Sincerely,

Christopher Fowler
