Should you be aware of your Lip balm?

Winter is here, the season of chapped lips!
If I were you, I’d be more than concerned about most major lip balm brands.

Can you trust your Chapstick? Blistex? Aveeno? Or Brand X?
Reach into your pocket or purse for that balm and check out the label! If you see any of those following toxins that you should think twice before using it: click on each toxin for more info

  • Petrolatum: Petrochemical that forms a barrier on skin; makes lipsticks shine and creams smoother; helps soften skinPresent in: Creams, lotions, ointments, wax depilatories, eyebrow pencils, eye shadows, liquid powders, lipsticksHealth concerns: May be contaminated with impurities and linked to cancer or other significant health problems; also causes allergic reactions, and is banned by the EU.
  • Saccharin
  • Mineral oil
  • Camphor
  • White Wax: bleached, purified wax from the honeycomb of the bee; used as a pharmaceutical stiffening agent.
  • Saccharin
  • Flavors
  • Carnuba Wax
  • Arachadyl Propionate
  • 2-octyldodecanol
  • Polyphenylmethylsiloxane 556
  • Wax Paraffin
  • D&C Red #6 Barium Lake

Look at what dermatologists have to say:

“Dr. Monte Meltzer is the chief of dermatology at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He says lip balm often includes ingredients that cause a tingling, such as salicylic acid, phenol and menthol. Some of these are exfoliants that cause lips to peel. In turn, the lips become thinner and less able to protect against the elements. So people need to apply again, and the vicious cycle continues.”

“This so-called addiction to lip balm is very real. We can alter the way the skin grows from the basal layer to the surface by applying something to the surface,” said Dr. Nicholas Perricone, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, to the Daily Herald in 2000. “What happens with continued use of lip balm is we’re putting a message on the surface of the skin that says to the base of the skin, ‘Do not proliferate. Do not double. Do not grow as rapidly as you normally do,’ because the signal is saying, ‘Close down, we’re sealed on top.’ “

There are lots of good lip balms out there. All you have to do is read the labels carefully and make wise choices. But you are, aren’t you? After all, you are reading this article.

I found a brand called: Earth to Body that carry 100% natural lip balm and other natural cosmetics. Earth To Body product recipes are originally developed with skin nutrition as the primary goal. They make all recipes from scratch and never use the chemically based cosmetic bases readily available.
They do not use sulphates, parabens, polysorbates, fragrances, perfumes or dyes or harsh preservatives or any of the toxins mentioned above.
